Sustainable Energy Waste to Resource Initiative (SEWRI)

CORD Ghana’s Sustainable Energy Waste to Resource Initiative (SEWRI) is a sustainable energy initiative that treats non-biodegradable and biodegradable waste not as trash, but as raw material for energy production.
The core principle is the circular economy: materials are kept in use for as long as possible, extracting maximum value before recovery and regeneration.
Organic waste is processed into compost and biochar for farming and biogas (briquettes) for cooking, while plastics are sorted and recycled into reusable materials.
Instead of landfilling or burning waste, which releases greenhouse gases and pollutants, the initiative captures the energy potential within waste through biological and thermal processes.
This shifts the linear “take-make-dispose” model to a closed loop where waste outputs become energy and nutrient inputs.
