Tamale, Aug 25, GNA – A day’s engagement workshop tailored to equip key stakeholders with the knowledge on renewable energy transition and sustainable environmental conservation has been held in Tamale.
The workshop, organised by Centre for Opportunities and Rural Development (CORD Ghana), a non-government organisation (NGO), formed part of the implementation of the Green Schools Initiative: Powering Up Energy Justice for a Brighter Future initiative.
The initiative, implemented by CORD Ghana and Eco Warriors with funding support from the UMI Fund, is rolled out in 10 schools and communities within the Central Gonja District in the Savannah Region as well as the Tamale and Sagnarigu Municipalities.
The engagement brought together heads of basic schools, Professional Learning Community (PLC) Coordinators, School Improvement Support Officers and teachers from the beneficiary schools to equip them with practical knowledge on renewable energy and environmental sustainability, and how to replicate same among their pupils.
The initiative leverages existing Green School Clubs established by CORD Ghana youth platform to educate learners on Energy, Afforestation among other environmental themes.
Dr. Kodimah Siita, Executive Director of CORD Ghana, speaking during the workshop, said the project was tailored to support renewable energy transition, provide beneficiary schools with renewable energy materials, facilitate awareness creation in schools and build the capacity of stakeholders to effectively disseminate knowledge to learners.
He emphasised the importance of renewable energy transition in addressing climate change, promoting energy justice and creating a sustainable future for the younger generation.
He said as part of CORD Ghana’s commitment to environmental sustainability, the organisation had introduced other initiatives, including the Learn, Educate and Act Now learning toolkit where students used games to understand issues of environmental sustainability, just energy transition, sexual and reproductive health rights, health, among others.
He urged stakeholders, especially schools, to embrace the initiative as a model for instilling environmentally friendly practices among pupils and students.
Madam Esther Nyamekye Opoku, the Programmes Director at CORD Ghana, outlined some of the organisation’s strategic interventions including Sustainable Energy, Waste to Resource Initiative, Tree Party 2025, Unpaid but not Unvalued and other eco-friendly programmes being implemented to build resilient communities for sustainable development.
She encouraged donor organisations, civil society actors and government agencies to prioritise support for such interventions to mitigate the impact of climate change and promote food security in the country.
Mr. Baba Oscar of the Sagnarigu Municipal Education Directorate, commended CORD Ghana and its partners for their commitment to environmental sustainability and food security and called for broader stakeholder support to scale up the interventions.
Participants at the engagement proposed the inclusion of renewable energy transition in PLC sessions to enhance students’ understanding of sustainable energy supply in the country.
